Refueling Your Imagination

The imagination has many names: subconscious, higher self, inner voice, muse, or even Daisy or Daniel. Throughout history, artists have pulled from this source to create wonderful and sometimes not so wonderful works of art. But what happens when the well of source runs dry?

As writers, we use this source to create story after story. The emptying of the well may be the main cause for what some call 'writer's block.' Input is an important part of being a writer and it shouldn't be overlooked. If it is, you may find yourself dry on ideas and faced with a towering wall before you.

While reading is a great form of fuel for the imagination, it is not the only available energy. To name a few alternatives: photos, paintings, movies, television, music, history. Each of these can provide you with inspiration for your next project.

Are you refueling?

At the moment I'm not refueling...more like trying to find the time to put out the words already thought and planned. But you're right in that inspiration can be derived from many, many sources. Just have to keep eyes, ears and mind open to them.

Terry, Good luck with your time search, it can be hard to find. I'm sure you are looking forward to the summer.

I spent last week refueling. I definitely needed it because now I'm feeling much better about writing and editing. :)

Cherie, Sounds good. I'm still feeling the pain, but working through it. :)

I'm taking a break, painting the entire inside of our home. It's been good for me to not think so much, just be. I'm observing the walls change colour, the smell of paint, the rawness of my hands, and it's a good thing, a renewal. But--the time to write is nearing.

Great post, Cher.

Working with your hands in itself can be a form of refueling. A break is a good thing, a way of rewiring.
