Your Muse

I re-read an article by Stephen King today. He talks of his muse, and his description makes me laugh.

"It's a scruffy little thing with fleas and often smells of whatever nasty mess it's been rolling in."

What else would you expect from a man who has the heart of a boy?

"People want to know why I do this, why I write such gross stuff. I like to tell them I have the heart of a small boy... and I keep it in a jar on my desk."

When I think of my muse, I envision a fairy like creature. She has the face of an angel and beautiful pink and purple wings. Maybe I need to ask for a replacement. She may not be up for scaring my readers. :)

Do you have a muse? What does he/she look like? Do you have more than one, taking shifts?

I ran across this video of Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love. She talks about her thoughts on the writer's muse. I thought you might enjoy.

Haha. I love his description too. I've never really thought about it much myself. I like your fairy muse, too.

:) Angie, thanks for the comment. Thinking about my muse is part of procrastination mode.

This was so cool because I've read how writers are supposed to sit down and just write. Don't wait on your muse. Plan things out and write your plan. Then you read about great writers like Stephen King or Elizabth Gilbert who treat their muse as something that's there--but they work anyway. I dearly love it when I get a great idea. I rush to my computer or my notebook and try to write it all down before it flits away. I like your idea about the fairy..I love faires, and I'd imagine they would be rather flighty!
Thanks for the food for thought... love your website!!

Patti,

Thank you and you are welcome. I hear most muses enjoy treats, chocolate, walks in nature. (And of course, you end up with the treats with no guilt - they aren't for you they are for you muse.)

Best wishes,
Cher

Nice post. I love his description too, an "unaccomodating" little muse for sure.
I don't have one but I also can't just sit and write. I have to be in the mood (and I am grateful that the mood strikes almost every day).
